Castle Museum of Saginaw County History

Near Frankenmuth, Michigan

Saginaw's Castle Museum looks like it was imported from a French provincial town, and that was exactly the architect's intention. William Martin Aiken designed the building as a federal post office, dedicated July third, eighteen ninety-eight, and drew on French Renaissance chateau forms to honor the Saginaw Valley's earliest European presence: French fur traders who worked these rivers in the sixteen hundreds. The Indiana limestone exterior carries turrets, steeply pitched roofs, and Gothic stonework that make the building look nothing like a post office.

By the nineteen thirties it had outgrown its space, and a plan to replace it was dropped after protests, so it was remodeled instead. When a new post office was built in the nineteen seventies, citizens again fought demolition, and the building became the county history museum it remains today, housing collections that trace the valley's lumber boom, its Ojibwe heritage, and its industrial transformation from timber to auto parts.
