Comstock Park: The Congressman's Mill Town
Near Grand Rapids, Michigan
Just north of Grand Rapids sits Comstock Park, a community that carries the name of one of Michigan's early industrial powerhouses. Charles C. Comstock arrived in Grand Rapids in eighteen fifty-three and threw himself into the lumber business, eventually partnering in the first factory in the city to manufacture sash, doors, and blinds.
He grew into a furniture-trade pioneer, served as Grand Rapids mayor, and won a seat in the United States Congress representing Michigan's Fifth District from eighteen eighty-five to eighteen eighty-seven. When this community north of the city formalized its identity in nineteen oh six, residents honored him with the name Comstock Park. Today it's home to roughly ten thousand five hundred people, a quiet suburb that still carries the name of a man who helped build the city just down the river.
