Hamtramck, Michigan
Near Detroit, Michigan
Hamtramck is a two-square-mile city entirely encircled by Detroit, with one of the most layered immigrant histories in the United States. Originally a Polish enclave that exploded in size after the Dodge Brothers opened their main plant here in nineteen fourteen, the population hit forty-eight thousand by nineteen twenty, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Polish bakeries and Catholic parishes defined Hamtramck for decades.
As those families moved to the suburbs, Yemeni, Bangladeshi, and Bosnian communities arrived, in twenty fifteen Hamtramck elected what was likely the first majority-Muslim city council in the country, and in twenty twenty-one voters chose an all-Muslim council and mayor. It now has roughly twenty-eight thousand residents speaking dozens of languages, and its dining strip remains one of metro Detroit's most internationally diverse eating destinations.
