Indian River, Michigan

Near Petoskey, Michigan

Indian River in Cheboygan County was first settled around eighteen seventy-six, and landowner Floyd Martin founded the community in eighteen seventy-eight. It was surveyed and platted by about eighteen eighty. The railroad later opened the community to tourists heading toward the Straits of Mackinac.

Indian River sits along the Indian River itself, which connects Burt Lake and Mullett Lake. It became a resort community in the early twentieth century as vacationers discovered the clear northern waters, and that character has defined it ever since.
