National Ski Hall of Fame, Ishpeming
Michigan
Ishpeming, Michigan calls itself the birthplace of organized skiing in America, and it has a strong case. In nineteen oh five, the National Ski Association was founded right here in Ishpeming, the first organized ski governing body in the United States. The region's Scandinavian immigrant miners, who had grown up skiing in Norway and Finland, brought the sport with them when they came to work the iron mines.
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum opened in Ishpeming in nineteen fifty-four, honoring that heritage.
The current building, opened in nineteen ninety-two, holds displays on hundreds of inductees and artifacts spanning over a century of American ski history. The building sits in the heart of an Upper Peninsula town that turned a mining community's winter pastime into a national institution.
