The Dearborn Inn: World's First Airport Hotel

Near Detroit, Michigan

Henry Ford built the Ford Airport in Dearborn in the nineteen twenties to prove that aviation had a commercial future. Then he realized his pilots and passengers had nowhere to sleep. He commissioned architect Albert Kahn to solve the problem, and the inn opened in nineteen thirty-one.

Kahn designed the Dearborn Inn in Georgian Colonial style, a gracious red-brick hotel with a crystal-chandeliered ballroom, and placed it adjacent to the airfield. It was billed as the world's first airport hotel. Eleanor Roosevelt stayed here.

So did Orville Wright, Charles Lindbergh, Walt Disney, and Ronald Reagan. Ford Airport itself eventually closed, but the inn remained, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen eighty-two. It reopened in twenty twenty-five after a full restoration.

A building that began as a solution to a scheduling problem became a landmark.
