The Fenton House Hotel
Near Flint, Michigan
When the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad finally reached Fenton in the eighteen fifties, the town needed a proper hotel fast. The building that went up almost immediately became the Fenton House. The railroad era made places like Fenton into genuine regional hubs, and the Fenton House was the living room where travelers from Detroit and beyond passed through. It is one of the more durable examples of how a single rail connection could transform a village's sense of itself almost overnight.
