Webberville: Three Names, One Village

Near Lansing, Michigan

The little village of Webberville, just east of Lansing, went through three names before it settled on the one it wears today. Ephraim Meech first settled the area in eighteen thirty-seven. A post office opened in eighteen forty under the name Phelpstown, honoring a local townsman named David Phelps.

By eighteen fifty the place had been renamed LeRoy, possibly for Michigan's first attorney general, Daniel LeRoy, or possibly for the New York town of the same name. Then the trouble started: there were already several villages in Michigan named Leroy. So in eighteen sixty-two the post office closed, and in eighteen sixty-seven the village was moved about a mile east and took a third and final name, Webberville, honoring postmaster Hubert Webber.

The village incorporated in eighteen seventy-one, and it has been Webberville ever since.
