Endion Station: The Depot That Moved

Near Duluth, Minnesota

The small redbrick depot you see at Canal Park was not always here. Endion Station was built at the end of the nineteenth century as the first stop outside downtown Duluth on the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway, the line that hauled iron ore from the Range down to Lake Superior. Architect I.

Vernon Hill designed it, a tidy little passenger house that served commuters and ore-country travelers for decades until passenger service ended in nineteen sixty-one. When Interstate Thirty-Five expansion threatened the building in the nineteen eighties, crews lifted the entire depot off its foundation and moved it to Canal Park, where it sits today as a visitor center. One of the last small-town passenger depots of its era, preserved by relocation.
