Eveleth's First Building
Minnesota
You are standing near where Eveleth began. In eighteen ninety-three, as mining spread across the Mesabi Range, a town was platted about a mile southwest of here, and its very first building was a simple hut west of present-day Northside Park. The place was named for Erwin Eveleth, a Michigan lumberman who had come to scout the white pine.
The first council meeting was held in the back room of a store in eighteen ninety-four. Then in eighteen ninety-five, prospectors found rich ore lying directly underneath the young town. So around nineteen hundred, the whole settlement was picked up and moved to higher ground, right about where you are now.
Eveleth was incorporated as a city in nineteen oh two, a town that literally got out of the way of its own treasure.
