Frostbite Falls, Home of Rocky and Bullwinkle

Near International Falls, Minnesota

If you grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, you already know this town by a different name. Rocky the flying squirrel and Bullwinkle the moose, stars of the beloved animated series that first aired in nineteen fifty nine, lived in a fictional Minnesota town called Frostbite Falls. That town is widely said to be based on International Falls.

The show's creator, Jay Ward, grew up in Berkeley, California, but as a boy he listened to University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football on the radio and idolized their star fullback, Bronko Nagurski, the same Bronko who grew up right here. On those same broadcasts, Ward kept hearing the weather report mention Nagurski's freezing hometown, described as the Icebox of the Nation. So when he needed a suitably frigid, out of the way home for a moose and a squirrel, he blended the real International Falls with its icy nickname and got Frostbite Falls.

It is a lovely little loop of local history. The town's most famous football son inspired a cartoon writer, who then turned the town's brutal cold into the punchline home of two of the most enduring characters in American animation. Rocky and Bullwinkle's Frostbite Falls is fiction, but its heart beats here on the Rainy River.
