The GAR Hall at Litchfield
Minnesota
Litchfield, Minnesota is home to one of the best-preserved Grand Army of the Republic halls in the country. Built in eighteen eighty-five, it served as the meeting lodge for local Union veterans of the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic was the largest organization of Union Civil War veterans in American history, counting over four hundred thousand members at its peak around eighteen ninety and wielding significant political influence.
Members gathered here to remember the war, support widows and orphans, and lobby for pensions. By the early twentieth century, membership had dwindled as veterans aged and died. Litchfield's hall survived while most others were demolished or repurposed.
It now operates as a museum, holding uniforms, weapons, photographs, and records from Meeker County men who served between eighteen sixty-one and eighteen sixty-five. It is considered one of only a handful of intact GAR halls remaining in Minnesota.
