Bonhomie: The Company Town That Vanished

Mississippi

The ruins you're near are what remain of Bonhomie, a company sawmill town that once housed workers and their families in the longleaf pine forests of southern Mississippi. The Tatum Lumber Company ran the mill here, and a full community grew up around it, with company housing, a commissary, and other buildings. The workers lived, shopped, and worshipped entirely within a world the company built and owned.

When the timber ran out, the company left. Bonhomie is gone now, its buildings sold off or left to rot, its residents scattered. It is a pattern repeated across the South: forests stripped, towns built fast and abandoned faster, leaving only a name and a foundation in the pines.
