The Threefoot Building: Meridian's Art Deco Tower

Mississippi

The Threefoot Building rises sixteen stories above downtown Meridian, still the tallest structure in the city nearly a hundred years after it opened. The Threefoot family came to Meridian after the Civil War and built a wholesale grocery business. Their sons, the Threefoot Brothers, commissioned a full Art Deco skyscraper in nineteen twenty-nine, designed by Jackson architect Claude Lindsley with a granite base, brick exterior, and colorful terra cotta ornamentation.

The timing was catastrophic. The stock market collapsed the same year the building opened, and the family business shut down during the Depression. The building spent decades mostly vacant.

After a comprehensive renovation, it reopened as a boutique hotel, one of the few Art Deco skyscrapers in Mississippi.
