Tremont: The First Lady of Country Music
Mississippi
Tremont, a small hill-country town in Itawamba County, is the birthplace of Virginia Wynette Pugh , better known as Tammy Wynette. She was born in May of nineteen forty-two and grew up picking cotton on her grandparents' farm outside town. She left Mississippi as a young woman, made her way to Nashville, and became one of the best-selling female artists in country music history, with twenty number-one singles on the country charts.
She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and is often called the First Lady of Country Music. The Tammy Wynette Legacy Center in Tremont tells her story, from the cotton fields of Itawamba County to the Grand Ole Opry.
