Camden Point, Burnt Twice by the Yankees

Missouri

Camden Point, in Platte County, had a post office before it had a proper town. The postal address dates to eighteen thirty-seven, nearly a decade before William Kincaid formally laid out the settlement in eighteen forty-eight. The original name was simply Camden, but Missouri already had a Camden on the books, so they added "Point" to make it unique.

The town paid a price for its Southern sympathies during the Civil War. When Union troops swept through from Weston and Platte City in eighteen sixty-four and found Confederate soldiers picnicking with Camden Point residents, the Federals torched much of the place. It was the second time war had scorched the streets. Camden Point rebuilt, was incorporated in nineteen sixty-two and has about four hundred fifty residents today.
