Richard H. Amberg
Missouri
This Saint Louis park carries the name of Richard Amberg, one of the most powerful newspapermen the city ever had. Born in nineteen twelve, he rose through the Newhouse newspaper chain. In nineteen fifty-five the publishing magnate Samuel Newhouse bought the Saint Louis Globe Democrat and installed Amberg as its publisher.
For twelve years he ran the morning paper with a heavy hand, championing civic causes and the conservative voice of the city. He died in office in nineteen sixty-seven. Saint Louis honored him by attaching his name to a park, recognizing both his standing in the newspaper world and his support for the city's parks and playgrounds. So this green space is really a quiet monument to the lost age of the big-city newspaper baron.
