Winston, Missouri

Missouri

Winston is a small Daviess County village that went through three names before settling on one. When the Chicago and Southwestern Railroad completed its line through here in the summer of eighteen seventy-one, the station halfway between Gallatin and Cameron was first called Crofton, after a local landowner. It was soon renamed Winstonville, after a railroad official named Winston, and finally shortened to Winston.

The town incorporated in eighteen seventy-five. A coal mine once operated nearby, briefly adding an industrial dimension to what was otherwise a railroad-and-farming stop on the high prairie. Today Winston is a very small community, population a little over two hundred, in the rolling agricultural country of northwestern Missouri.
