Apgar Village

Near Going To The Sun Road, Montana

The small cluster of cabins and shops at the south end of Lake McDonald traces its roots to the eighteen nineties, when a settler named Milo Apgar homesteaded here with a couple of friends, planning to farm. The rocky soil and short growing season killed that idea fast. What Apgar found instead was a steady stream of visitors arriving by Great Northern Railway at the little station called Belton, eager for supplies and a hot meal before heading into the mountains.

Apgar and his neighbors turned to serving them. The village that grew around his enterprise still bears his name. Today it is the busy western hub of Glacier National Park, home to a visitor center, a campground, boat rentals, and the trailhead for the Going-to-the-Sun Road into the park's interior.
