Big Sky Resort: Chet Huntley's Dream Mountain

Near Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky Resort, thirty miles south of Bozeman in the Madison Range, was the dream of Chet Huntley, the NBC news anchor who co-anchored The Huntley-Brinkley Report from nineteen fifty-six to nineteen seventy. Huntley was a Montana native who wanted to build a world-class ski resort in his home state. He began selling shares to investors in the late nineteen sixties and the resort opened in December of nineteen seventy-three, just months before Huntley died of lung cancer. Today Big Sky encompasses more than five thousand eight hundred acres of skiable terrain across three mountains, making it one of the largest ski resorts in North America by acreage, with a famously low skier-to-acreage ratio its operators market as the Biggest Skiing in America.
