Browning: Capital of the Blackfeet Nation

Montana

Browning is the main town on the Blackfeet Reservation and serves as the political and cultural capital of the Blackfeet Nation, one of the largest tribes in the United States. The reservation covers one and a half million acres along the Rocky Mountain Front, just east of Glacier National Park.

At the junction of Highways Two and Eighty-Nine, the Museum of the Plains Indian opened in nineteen forty-one under the United States Department of the Interior. Its collection spans the cultures of a dozen Northern Plains nations, from Blackfeet and Crow to Shoshone and Nez Perce, with historic clothing, horse gear, weapons, and ceremonial objects. Carved wood panels at the entrance are the work of noted Blackfeet sculptor John Clarke. The museum remains one of the most comprehensive windows into Northern Plains Indigenous life anywhere in the country.
