Cathedral of Saint Helena: Vienna in Montana

Near Helena, Montana

The twin spires rising two hundred and thirty feet above the west side of Helena do not belong to the skyline you might expect from a frontier mining capital. They belong to Vienna. The Cathedral of Saint Helena was modeled almost exactly on the Votivkirche, the great neo-Gothic church on the Ringstrasse, and the resemblance is not accidental. Architect A. O. Von Herbulis was born and educated in Budapest, trained at European schools of architecture, and brought those traditions across the Atlantic when Bishop John Patrick Carroll chose him to design the cathedral in nineteen oh five.

Construction began in nineteen oh eight. The cornerstone was laid in October of that year, and the first Mass was celebrated in November of nineteen fourteen, though finish work continued through nineteen twenty-four. The Columbia Construction Company of New York handled the execution. The result is what the Visit Montana website calls an outstanding example of Geometric Gothic: pointed arches, ribbed vaults, elaborate stone tracery, and those unmistakable spires visible from miles out on the approach roads to Helena.

The interior holds eleven thousand six hundred and ninety-three square feet of stained glass across fifty-nine windows. The glass depicts scenes from the Old and New Testament and was imported from Bavaria. When afternoon light hits the nave, the effect is vivid enough that first-time visitors sometimes stop mid-step.

The cathedral sits on a quiet residential street, a deliberate distance from the commercial district, and the contrast between the surrounding Victorian houses and the scale of its spires heightens the visual drama. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains an active parish. The diocese regards it as the mother church of Catholicism in Montana, a tradition reaching back to missionary priests who followed the gold-rush miners into the territory in the eighteen sixties.
