Huntley, Montana

Montana

The land around Huntley was Crow Indian Reservation territory until nineteen oh four. Congress authorized the Huntley Project in April of nineteen oh five, the fifth irrigation scheme approved under the Reclamation Act of nineteen oh two. The Bureau of Reclamation diverted water from the Yellowstone River through a network of canals, turning dry bench land into farmable fields.

The town of Huntley and its neighbors, Worden, Ballantine, and Pompey's Pillar, all sprang up along the railroad as the project took shape in nineteen oh seven. Sugar beets and alfalfa became the backbone of the local economy, and the Huntley Project Museum preserves that story today. The name itself honors S.

O. Huntley, a partner in the Clark and Huntley stagecoach firm that once ran through this valley.
