Main Street Bozeman: A Downtown That Held

Near Bozeman, Montana

Bozeman's Main Street is one of the few small-city downtowns in the American West that never fully hollowed out. While mall development and suburban sprawl gutted comparable downtowns across Montana and Wyoming in the nineteen seventies and eighties, Bozeman's corridor between Willson Avenue and Rouse Avenue retained a mix of locally owned restaurants, gear shops, bookstores, and bars that anchored foot traffic year-round. The historic Baxter Hotel, built in nineteen twenty-nine, remains a downtown landmark.

The Gallatin History Museum, housed in the old city jail a block off Main Street, holds the county's primary collection of photographs, documents, and objects from the settlement era. The street is now considerably more expensive than it was a generation ago, but it retains the bones of a working downtown.
