Malta and the Last Wild Bunch Robbery

Montana

On July third, nineteen oh one, Kid Curry, also known as Harvey Logan and the most dangerous member of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch, stopped a Great Northern passenger train just west of Malta near a place called Exeter Creek. He and his associates pried open the express car and made off with about forty thousand dollars, mostly in unsigned banknotes that were hard to spend. The gang then vanished south across the Milk River into the Missouri River Breaks, heading toward their hideout near Landusky.

Historians regard this robbery as the last major operation credited to the Wild Bunch as a gang. The Little Rockies had been the Logan brothers' home territory for a decade. Malta was close enough to the action that the robbery echoed through town for years.

The Phillips County Museum here still tells the outlaw story of the Hi-Line.
