Stanford, Montana

Montana

Stanford is the county seat of Judith Basin County, a fertile stretch of central Montana rolling prairie enclosed by the Highwood, Big Snowy, and Little Belt Mountains. The town takes its name from Stanfordville in Duchess County, New York, the old home of Calvin and Edward Bower, two brothers who ran sheep and eventually built a large ranching operation in the Judith Basin. The Great Northern Railway reached the area in the early nineteen hundreds and brought the homesteading wave that transformed the basin from open-range sheep country into a patchwork of dryland wheat farms.

Stanford grew up as the service hub for that farming community: elevator, grain buyer, courthouse, implement dealer. The Central Montana Agricultural Research Center, established in nineteen oh eight near Moccasin, spent decades developing the wheat varieties and dryland farming practices that still shape agriculture across central Montana.
