Whitefish Station
Near Whitefish, Montana
The Whitefish train depot is a small jewel of Pacific Northwest architecture. Built by the Great Northern Railway between nineteen twenty-seven and nineteen twenty-eight in a Tudor Revival style, it was designed to evoke the alpine feeling of Glacier Park, which sits just thirty miles to the east. The Great Northern promoted Glacier aggressively as the American Alps, and its depots were part of that brand.
Whitefish was a railroad division point, meaning crews changed here and locomotives were serviced, and the town essentially grew up around that function. Today Amtrak's Empire Builder still stops at the station on its run between Chicago and Seattle, making it one of the few historic depots in Montana that sees daily passenger service.
