Bridgeport and the Sandstone Sentinels

Nebraska

Bridgeport, the seat of Morrill County, sits near one of the most important landmarks on the entire Oregon Trail: Courthouse Rock and Jail Rock, a pair of massive sandstone formations rising nearly four hundred feet from the North Platte Valley floor. For emigrants on the trail in the eighteen forties and fifties, these rocks were the first dramatic sign that the endless prairie was giving way to something different. Diaries from the period describe the excitement of spotting them from ten miles out.

Courthouse Rock was named by the emigrants themselves, who thought the main formation resembled a courthouse in St. Louis. The nearby Chimney Rock, visible from Bridgeport and now a National Historic Site, drew the same awe: nearly half a million trail travelers passed it and recorded their impressions.

Bridgeport grew up as a ranching and farming center after the Burlington Railroad arrived in eighteen ninety-nine, and the Pioneer Trails Museum in town preserves the overland route's history for this stretch of the Platte Valley.
