Buffalo Bill Ranch
Nebraska
West of North Platte, off the Lincoln Highway, sits Scout's Rest Ranch, the home William Buffalo Bill Cody built in the eighteen eighties at the height of his fame. Cody bought the first land here in eighteen seventy-eight and had the Second Empire-style ranch house constructed in eighteen eighty-six, the largest house in North Platte at the time. It was here that Cody and his troupe rehearsed the Wild West Show before taking it on the road.
At its peak, the ranch covered four thousand acres where Cody experimented with selective breeding of cattle and horses. Nebraska acquired the property in nineteen sixty-four, and the National Park Service designated it a National Historic Landmark in twenty twenty-one. The barn, ice house, and ranch house still stand.
