George W. Frank House

Nebraska

Near Kearney stands the George W. Frank House, built in eighteen eighty-nine of red sandstone in a style blending Shingle and Richardsonian Romanesque influences. Frank poured his fortune into developing the town, building a canal, an electric power plant, and an electric railway.

His mansion was one of the first homes west of the Missouri River to be wired for electricity during construction. Then the Nebraska land boom collapsed, Frank went bankrupt, and the house became a private sanitarium and then part of the state tuberculosis hospital, which used it until the early nineteen seventies. The University of Nebraska at Kearney eventually acquired it and operates it today as the G.

W. Frank Museum of History and Culture.
