Harvey P. Sutton House, Frank Lloyd Wright's Only Nebraska Design
Nebraska
The Prairie-style house on Norris Avenue in McCook is a long way from Chicago, which makes it all the more remarkable. It is the only structure Frank Lloyd Wright ever designed for the state of Nebraska, and the story behind it begins with a woman reading a magazine.
In nineteen oh one, Eliza Sutton came across Wright's proposals for a Prairie home published in the Ladies Home Journal. She wanted that house. She contacted the architect, who sent a design. Too grand, she told him. He sent another. Still not right. On the third attempt, Wright got it right. The resulting two-story stucco and frame home, designed between nineteen oh five and nineteen oh seven and built between nineteen oh seven and nineteen oh eight, features twenty leaded glass windows on each floor and the horizontal lines and open floor plan that define Wright's Prairie work. Eliza's husband Harvey gave the house his name, but the vision was entirely hers. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen seventy-eight.
