Hastings College, Nebraska's Only Presbyterian College

Nebraska

Hastings College opened its doors in September of eighteen eighty-two, greeting its first students. Chartered by the Nebraska Legislature that same year, it was founded by Presbyterian church leaders who had been advocating for a college in the city since the early eighteen seventies. It remains a Presbyterian-affiliated college today.

The school's most famous alumnus grew up in this city and played football here before going on to define an era. Tom Osborne, born in Hastings in nineteen thirty-seven, earned his undergraduate degree at Hastings College in nineteen fifty-nine. He went on to coach the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers for twenty-five years, winning thirteen conference titles and three national championships.
