Johnson County: Nebraska's Youngest Plains County Seat
Nebraska
Johnson County in southeastern Nebraska was organized in eighteen fifty-seven during the Nebraska Territory period and named for Richard Mentor Johnson, the ninth vice president of the United States. Its county seat, Tecumseh, was named for the Shawnee leader who allied with the British during the War of eighteen twelve and died at the Battle of the Thames in eighteen thirteen. The county's rolling terrain is crossed by the Big Nemaha River, an agricultural landscape shaped by homesteaders who arrived after the Civil War and the Homestead Act of eighteen sixty-two. The county is perhaps best known today for the Tecumseh Opera House, a preserved eighteen eighty brick building that served as the region's performing arts center for nearly forty years.
