Nebraska Holocaust Memorial
Near Lincoln, Nebraska
In Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, the only state-owned cemetery in the nation, stands Nebraska's permanent memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. Dedicated on April fifteenth, two thousand seven, the memorial was built without a dollar of state funding: nearly a thousand private donors contributed over three years of volunteer effort.
The design centers on a Star of Remembrance monument, ringed by stones representing the eleven million people murdered by Nazi Germany and its allies. A Wall of Remembrance displays photographs from the Holocaust era. A Butterfly Garden honors the one and a half million children who were killed. The choice of Wyuka Cemetery was deliberate: as the state's only public cemetery, it belongs to all Nebraskans, making the memorial not a Lincoln landmark but a statewide act of witness.
