Oakland: Swedish Capital of Nebraska
Nebraska
Oakland, Nebraska considers itself the Swedish Capital of Nebraska, in recognition of its founding population and sustained cultural identity. Swedish immigrants began homesteading along Logan Creek in Burt County in the eighteen sixties. The town was named for an early settler, John Oak. The Swedish Heritage Center, in a former Swedish Covenant church, displays pioneer artifacts, Swedish crystal, and needlework brought across the Atlantic by the original settlers.
