Thedford: Heart of the Sandhills

Nebraska

Thedford is the county seat of Thomas County, one of the least populated counties in Nebraska, sitting squarely in the middle of the Sandhills, the largest grass-stabilized dune system in the Western Hemisphere. For thousands of years this landscape was open range, and Texas cattle drovers pushed herds north through here in the eighteen seventies and eighties.

The county was organized in eighteen eighty-seven and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived the same year, making Thedford the natural hub. Population surged after the Kinkaid Act of nineteen oh four allowed settlers to claim up to six hundred and forty acres in western Nebraska, four times the standard homestead. By nineteen twenty the county held nearly eighteen hundred people. Since then most have drifted away, leaving Thedford a quiet ranch town where cattle still outnumber residents by a wide margin and the rolling bluestem grass runs to every horizon.
