The Basque Sheepherder Monument

Near Reno, Nevada

On a low hill above Rancho San Rafael Park, a blocky bronze figure stands more than twenty feet tall against the desert sky. A shepherd carries a lamb across his shoulders beneath a full moon. This is the National Monument to the Basque Sheepherder, dedicated in nineteen eighty-nine.

Many of the first Basque immigrants to the American West came to herd sheep, men who spent months alone with their flocks across the high country of Nevada and California. The figure is abstract, bronze slabs meeting in a shepherd with a lamb, a tribute to that loneliness and to a people whose quiet labor shaped this corner of the country.
