Campton, New Hampshire
New Hampshire
In October of seventeen sixty-one, Governor Benning Wentworth granted this township to Jabez Spencer of Connecticut and sixty-three associates. Spencer died before anyone settled the land. The first families arrived around seventeen sixty-five, Connecticut people, the Foxes and the Taylors, hacking farms out of the valley along the Pemigewasset River.
Campton incorporated in seventeen sixty-seven and its name, by one account, came from a camp the first proprietors built while surveying. Moses Little raised a mill near the river around seventeen sixty-eight, and for half a century it ground grain for settlers spread across the surrounding mountains. The origin of the name is not settled, but one account ties it to that survey camp.
