Richard Jackson House

New Hampshire

The Richard Jackson House in Portsmouth is the oldest surviving wood-frame house in New Hampshire, built around sixteen sixty-four. Richard Jackson was a farmer and carpenter who raised this post-and-beam saltbox on lands he had cleared himself near the Piscataqua River. The house stayed in his family for generations, its hewn-oak frame absorbing three and a half centuries of New England winters.

Historic New England now owns and preserves it. Walking past, you are looking at a building that was already more than a century old when the American Revolution began, a quiet reminder of how deep colonial roots run along this stretch of coast.
