Suncook Village: Mill Town on the River
Near Manchester, New Hampshire
The Suncook River drops fast enough here that early settlers could not ignore it. Early millers harnessed the current for saw mills and grist mills. Then came the industrial push.
In the early eighteen hundreds, cotton mills rose along the river, and the village that grew around them would eventually host multiple large textile mills. Several mills ran into the nineteen hundreds, weaving cloth and turning wood and grinding grain for the surrounding region.
Suncook represents the pattern repeated across New England: a fast-moving river, a determined entrepreneur, and within a generation a village of mill workers where there had been only farmland. Many of those industrial buildings still frame the riverbank today.
