The King's Highway

Near Woodstock, New Hampshire

You are near the path of the King's Highway, the first planned road in Lebanon, New Hampshire. When proprietors came to survey the town's first hundred-acre lots in seventeen sixty-one, they used this road as their baseline, and it was formally laid out in seventeen sixty-four, eight rods wide. Most of Lebanon's earliest settlers had come up from Connecticut, and by seventeen sixty-seven the town counted more than a hundred and sixty residents drawn by this new road and the land it opened.

Sections of the old highway still survive today, lined with their original stone walls. In nineteen seventeen, the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a marker remembering this colonial roadway that shaped how the town was settled, more than two and a half centuries ago.
