Martin Johnson Heade and the Luminist Eye

Near Trenton, New Jersey

Martin Johnson Heade was born and raised near this spot in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in eighteen nineteen. As a boy he studied painting with Edward Hicks, the Quaker folk artist known for his Peaceable Kingdom series, which gave Heade an unusual foundation: devotional simplicity meets close observation of the natural world.

Heade went on to become one of the defining figures of luminism, a mid-nineteenth-century American style that bathed landscapes in still, glowing light rather than dramatic brushwork. His salt marsh paintings captured the flat coastal meadows of New England with an almost photographic quiet. He also produced a celebrated series of hummingbird studies from his travels in South America and Central America. Though he spent much of his career in Boston and later Saint Augustine, Florida, the attentive eye he trained here in Bucks County stayed with him. He died in nineteen oh four, and his reputation grew steadily in the decades that followed.
