Old Newton Burial Ground: Five Thousand Souls Since 1762

New Jersey

The Old Newton Burial Ground is one of the oldest cemeteries in Sussex County, New Jersey. The oldest portion was dedicated in seventeen sixty-two as part of the original town plot. The ground was enlarged around eighteen twenty, and in eighteen thirty-seven Job S.

Halsted donated three-fifths of an acre to the Presbyterian Church to expand it further. By eighteen seventy-six, historians estimated that roughly five thousand people were buried here, including many of the earliest European settlers of the county. That number makes it not just a local graveyard but a primary record of colonial and early American life in northwestern New Jersey, holding the remains of generations who built the region before the Revolution and long after it.
