Robbinsville: New Township, Old Crossroads
Near Trenton, New Jersey
Robbinsville Township is one of the newer municipalities in Mercer County, only adopting the name Robbinsville in two thousand eight when it rebranded from Washington Township to distinguish itself from other Washington Townships across New Jersey. The land has been settled since the mid-eighteen hundreds, and the original community was named for George Robbins, a congressman who lived in the area. For most of its history it was agricultural, producing grain and livestock for the Trenton market.
The postwar era brought suburban development, and the township's population more than doubled between nineteen ninety and two thousand ten. Today Robbinsville is best known outside the region for the Akshardham Hindu temple complex, which opened on its grounds in two thousand twenty-three and draws visitors from across the Eastern Seaboard.
