Sayreville's First Congregation

New Jersey

The United Methodist Church here holds a quiet distinction: it was the first religious congregation in this part of South Amboy that would eventually become Sayreville. The congregation was chartered in eighteen forty-eight, nearly three decades before Sayreville was organized as its own municipality in eighteen seventy-six. Faith came to this stretch of New Jersey the old way, carried by a circuit rider, a minister on horseback making regular rounds through scattered rural settlements.

Methodism spread across early America almost entirely through that system, with itinerant preachers covering enormous distances on country roads. By the time this congregation put down permanent roots, it was already the spiritual anchor for a community that had not yet even settled on its own name.
