The Baptist Church on the Green: Washington's Hospital

New Jersey

The Baptist Church on the Green stood in the years leading up to the Revolution; the Revolution turned New Jersey into one of the war's most contested territories. During the Revolution, when Continental forces were camped nearby, the congregation opened its doors to the Continental forces, and the building was converted into a military hospital. Wounded and sick soldiers were treated within these walls, and some who did not recover were buried on the grounds.

Some soldiers are said to be interred here, sharing burial ground with the congregation's own dead. Churches across New Jersey and Pennsylvania served this same grim purpose during the war. This one still stands, a reminder that the Revolution was fought not just on battlefields but in borrowed sanctuaries.
