Algodones, New Mexico
New Mexico
Algodones means cottons in Spanish, and the village developed in the Rio Grande valley under Spanish colonial rule. The site is older than the name. La Angostura, the narrow pass near Algodones, was an important trade and travel route through the valley.
Spanish colonial authorities recognized its strategic value early. Controlling this pass on the Camino Real protected the supply line between Santa Fe and Mexico City. A small settlement developed here through the seventeen hundreds, and the community has remained in place, largely unchanged in character, ever since.
You are passing through a quiet village with deep roots on the Camino Real.
