Gateway to the Navajo Nation
Near Gallup, New Mexico
The Navajo Nation is the largest Native American reservation in the United States by land area, spanning more than twenty-seven thousand square miles across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. That is roughly the size of West Virginia. The Nation maintains its own government headquartered at Window Rock, a short drive northwest of Gallup, with a president, a council of delegates, and its own court system.
Diné Bizaad, the Navajo language, is spoken by an estimated one hundred seventy thousand people today, making it one of the most widely spoken Indigenous languages in the United States. Gallup is the largest commercial center immediately adjacent to the Nation, and on any given day the city's grocery stores, medical clinics, banks, and pawnshops serve a population that extends deep into the reservation.
