Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio
New Mexico
The adobe compound you are passing near is where Georgia O'Keeffe spent the last decades of her life and did her most iconic work. She first came to northern New Mexico in nineteen twenty-nine and returned summer after summer for twenty years before making it permanent. In nineteen forty-five she bought this house in Abiquiu from the Catholic Church, attracted by its large irrigated garden and a particular door in the courtyard wall that became a recurring subject in her paintings.
She spent three years rebuilding the structure before moving in. From here, working with the bleached bones, red cliffs, and stark desert light of the Chama Valley, she produced the images that defined the American Southwest for the world. She lived here until her death in nineteen eighty-six at age ninety-eight.
The National Historic Landmark is open for guided tours through the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
