Montoya: Where the Road Ran Out
New Mexico
Montoya sits on the old Route Sixty-Six alignment between Santa Rosa and Tucumcari, a scatter of collapsed and abandoned buildings. It was never large, a ranch-service stop and a post office, but for three decades it had what the highway gave every small settlement: reliable traffic and people who needed gas and a meal. Montoya began in nineteen oh two as a railroad stop and loading point, and the highway and the rail line ran side by side across the New Mexico grassland.
When Interstate Forty bypassed this section of the old road, Montoya lost its reason to exist. The gas stations closed. The families moved.
What remains is the bones of a town that was never built for permanence, just for the passage of people going somewhere else.
